Privacy Policy

Nomad is a community-driven map for explorers and overlanders, built and operated by DEXworks ("we," "us," or "our"). This policy explains what information we collect when you use Nomad, why we collect it, and the choices you have.

Account information. When you create an account, we collect your email address and a username. If you sign in with Google or Discord, we receive your name, email address, and profile picture from that provider. If you sign up with a password instead, we store a securely hashed version of it — we never store or have access to your actual password.

Content you submit. When you request a new map location, we collect the location's name, description, GPS coordinates, any amenities you tag, and the photos you upload (currently three per submission). When you submit a bug report or suggestion, we collect what you write plus some technical context captured automatically — the page you were on, your browser type, your screen size, and your current map view (center point, zoom level, and any active search or filters) — so the report is easier to act on. When you calculate or share a route, we store the start and destination coordinates and labels you provide.

Technical data. Like most websites, our servers log standard technical information such as your IP address, browser type, and request timestamps. We also record anonymous internal traffic analytics (which pages are viewed and roughly how often) so we can understand how Nomad is used — this uses a temporary, non-cookie identifier that resets each browser session, not a persistent tracking profile, and we don't share it with any third party.

Photo files can contain embedded metadata — such as the exact date, time, and GPS coordinates a photo was taken. We automatically strip this metadata from every photo when you upload it, so it's never stored or displayed on Nomad.

• To operate your account and let you sign in.
• To display community-submitted locations on the map once they've passed moderation review.
• To review and respond to bug reports and suggestions.
• To generate search results and driving routes, which requires sending relevant queries or coordinates to the third-party services described below.
• To maintain and improve Nomad.

Certain features work by sending limited data to outside services, each governed by their own privacy practices:

• Google and Discord — used only if you choose to sign in with them.
• OpenStreetMap Nominatim — receives the text you type when searching for a town or city on the map.
• Project OSRM — receives the coordinates of your route's start and destination to calculate driving directions.
• OpenFreeMap, Esri, and OpenTopoMap — supply the map tiles/imagery you see; loading the map sends your IP address to whichever of these is currently selected.

We use a single session cookie to keep you signed in. We don't currently use third-party advertising or tracking cookies. You can accept or decline this cookie from the banner shown on your first visit, and change your choice anytime via "Cookie Preferences" in the footer. Viewing the map doesn't require an account, so declining this cookie is fine if you just want to browse — you'll only need to accept it if you want to sign in or create an account, which is required to submit or suggest locations, suggest edits, leave reviews, or subscribe to Premium.

Premium subscribers can download map tiles, location details, and photos for an area they choose, so they're available without a connection. This data is stored locally in your own browser — never uploaded to or stored on our servers — and you can delete any downloaded area at any time from within the Offline Maps panel on the map.

We keep your account and submitted content for as long as your account is active. To request deletion of your account or anything you've submitted, contact us using the details in Section 12 below — Nomad doesn't yet have a self-service deletion tool, so we'll process these requests manually.

We take reasonable steps to protect your information, including hashing passwords and restricting administrative access. No method of storage or transmission is completely secure, and we can't guarantee absolute security.

Nomad is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.

We may update this policy as Nomad changes. We'll update the date at the top of this page when we do.
